FRAGMENT (THREE)

INTO THE NIGHT

DAVID COYLE - RACHEL CRANE - JAKE NELSON

Float with me in the world of ether

  • Dave Coyle is a photographer based near Seattle, Washington, specializing in moody, atmospheric landscapes that blur the boundaries between observation and imagination. Drawn to the interplay of light, Dave crafts images that evoke both the mystery and quiet beauty of his Pacific Northwest surroundings. Often working in the early morning hours, Dave transforms everyday environments into cinematic scenes. He finds photographic inspiration from Todd Hido and Saul Leiter, as well as being drawn to the works of artists from the American Tonalism period. Dave was recognized as a LensCulture Emerging Artist Editor's Pick in 2023, as well as being selected as an Editor’s Pick for the LifeFramer ‘Colors’ open call in 2024. One of Dave’s highlights in photography came in November 2024 when he was a participant in the Eyes In Progress “Cinematic Narratives workshop, which was led by Todd Hido in Paris.

  •  The past year, Rachel Crane has been shaping her Self Portrait Series. She enters this ritual to both escape and return to herself. Her practice, rooted in experimental portraiture, shifts and transforms as she moves through new techniques, letting each phase alter the way she sees the world.

The basis of her work is a conversation between the metaphysical and physical spaces. Seeking out locations that resonate with her, giving the environment the power to guide her vision. Each location holds its own intelligence, coaxing movement, play, and surrender. The environment becomes her collaborator.

Beneath the surface of the place, her work navigates the terrain of subconscious desires, death and birth of identity, the masked and the unmasked, animalistic instincts, other realms, shifting time, shapeshifting bodies, sexuality, gender, the tension between filth and purity, and the contradictions between fear and love, pain and pleasure, and discipline and play. Once these qualities are acknowledged internally, they begin to reveal themselves externally, creating an intimacy with the world that is as rare as it is fleeting. This depth can rarely be experienced in full, but Rachel seeks to approach it by stepping outside the threshold of the known, entering the spaces where comfort dissolves.
